  • 1 1/3 cups flaked coconut

Instructions

Cake:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round baking pans.
  2. Melt Chocolate: In a small saucepan, melt the chocolate with water over low heat, stirring until smooth. Let it cool.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg yolks, one at a time, then add the melted chocolate and vanilla extract.
  5. Combine: Add the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.
  6. Beat Egg Whites: In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Fold them gently into the batter.
  7. Bake: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.
