Savory Beef Stir-Fry with Onions and Bell Peppers Recipe

This Savory Beef Stir-Fry is a bold, flavorful dish made with tender strips of beef, caramelized onions, and colorful bell peppers tossed in a glossy, savory sauce. Quick to prepare and packed with rich umami flavor, it’s perfect for busy weeknights and pairs beautifully with rice or noodles.

Ingredients

Beef

  • 1 lb (450 g) beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

Vegetables

  • 1 large onion, sliced

  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced

  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Stir-Fry Sauce

  • ¼ cup soy sauce

  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce

  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce (optional)

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar or honey

  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar or lemon juice

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon chili flakes (optional)

For Cooking

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 2 tablespoons water or beef broth


Instructions

Prepare the Beef

  1. In a bowl, toss sliced beef with cornstarch and 1 tablespoon soy sauce.

  2. Let marinate for 10 minutes.

Cook the Beef

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat.

  2. Add beef in a single layer and sear for 2–3 minutes per side until browned.

  3. Remove beef from pan and set aside.

Cook the Vegetables

  1. Add remaining oil to the pan.

  2. Sauté onions for 2 minutes until slightly softened.

  3. Add bell peppers and garlic; cook for another 2–3 minutes.

Make the Sauce

  1. In a small bowl, mix soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, black pepper, and chili flakes.

Combine and Finish

  1. Return beef to the pan.

  2. Pour in sauce and add water or broth.

  3. Stir well and cook for 2–3 minutes until sauce thickens and coats everything evenly.

  4. Remove from heat and serve hot.


Notes

  • Slice beef against the grain for maximum tenderness.

  • Adjust sweetness and spice to taste.

  • Add mushrooms or snap peas for extra vegetables.

  • Works well with chicken or shrimp as substitutions.
