Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions Recipe
Ingredients:
- For the Marinade:
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar (optional)
- 1 lb (450g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
- For the Stir-fry:
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 1-2 bell peppers (red, green, or yellow), sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp ginger, minced
- 2-3 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tsp sesame oil (optional)
- ½ cup beef or chicken broth
- 1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (optional, for thickening)
Instructions:
- Marinate the Beef:
- In a bowl, mix soy sauce, oyster sauce, cornstarch, sugar, and rice vinegar.
- Add the sliced beef and coat well. Let it marinate for at least 20-30 minutes.
- Cook the Vegetables:
- Heat 1 tbsp of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
- Add the sliced onions and bell peppers. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until they are slightly softened but still crisp. Remove and set aside.
- Cook the Beef:
- Heat another 1 tbsp of vegetable oil in the same skillet or wok.
- Add the marinated beef in a single layer. Cook for 1-2 minutes per side until browned. Work in batches if needed. Remove and set aside.
- Combine and Sauce:
- Add garlic and ginger to the skillet, stir-frying for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Return the beef and vegetables to the skillet.
- Pour in soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and beef/chicken broth. Stir to combine.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, add the cornstarch slurry and stir until the sauce thickens.
- Serve:
- Serve the pepper steak hot over steamed rice or noodles.
