Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions

Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions Recipe

Ingredients:

  • For the Marinade:
    • 2 tbsp soy sauce
    • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
    • 1 tbsp cornstarch
    • 1 tsp sugar
    • 1 tbsp rice vinegar (optional)
    • 1 lb (450g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • For the Stir-fry:
    • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
    • 1 large onion, sliced
    • 1-2 bell peppers (red, green, or yellow), sliced
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 tbsp ginger, minced
    • 2-3 tbsp soy sauce
    • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
    • 1 tsp sesame oil (optional)
    • ½ cup beef or chicken broth
    • 1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (optional, for thickening)

Instructions:

  1. Marinate the Beef:
    • In a bowl, mix soy sauce, oyster sauce, cornstarch, sugar, and rice vinegar.
    • Add the sliced beef and coat well. Let it marinate for at least 20-30 minutes.
  2. Cook the Vegetables:
    • Heat 1 tbsp of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
    • Add the sliced onions and bell peppers. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until they are slightly softened but still crisp. Remove and set aside.
  3. Cook the Beef:
    • Heat another 1 tbsp of vegetable oil in the same skillet or wok.
    • Add the marinated beef in a single layer. Cook for 1-2 minutes per side until browned. Work in batches if needed. Remove and set aside.
  4. Combine and Sauce:
    • Add garlic and ginger to the skillet, stir-frying for 30 seconds until fragrant.
    • Return the beef and vegetables to the skillet.
    • Pour in soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and beef/chicken broth. Stir to combine.
    • If you prefer a thicker sauce, add the cornstarch slurry and stir until the sauce thickens.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the pepper steak hot over steamed rice or noodles.
