Baking Soda and Lemon Water: A Simple Refreshing Drink
Baking soda and lemon water is a simple homemade beverage made with fresh lemon, water, and a small amount of baking soda. The combination creates a light fizz as the acidic lemon juice reacts with the baking soda.
While this drink can be refreshing, it’s important to keep the amount of baking soda small. Baking soda is high in sodium, so this beverage should not be treated as a detox, weight-loss drink, or treatment for high blood pressure, diabetes, or other medical conditions.
Ingredients
- 1 cup (240 ml) cool or room-temperature water
- 1/2 fresh lemon
- 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
- 2–3 thin lemon slices, for garnish
- Ice cubes, optional
Instructions
1. Prepare the Lemon
Wash the lemon thoroughly and squeeze 1/2 lemon into a glass or pitcher. Remove any seeds.
2. Add the Water
Pour 1 cup of water over the fresh lemon juice and stir well.
3. Add the Baking Soda Carefully
Add 1/8 teaspoon of baking soda to the lemon water.
The mixture will begin to fizz as the baking soda reacts with the lemon juice. Add it slowly to prevent excessive foaming.
4. Stir Gently
Stir for several seconds until most of the fizz settles and the ingredients are combined.
5. Serve
Add a few fresh lemon slices and ice if desired. Serve immediately.
Recipe Notes
- Do not use large amounts of baking soda. More is not better.
- The drink may taste slightly salty or alkaline depending on the amount of lemon and baking soda used.
- For a milder flavor, add more water rather than increasing the baking soda.
- Because baking soda contains a significant amount of sodium, people who need to limit sodium should be especially cautious.
- If you have kidney disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, are pregnant, or take prescription medications, speak with a healthcare professional before regularly consuming baking soda drinks.
How Often Can You Drink It?
There is no established medical need to drink baking soda and lemon water regularly. If you simply enjoy the flavor, it is better to treat it as an occasional homemade beverage rather than a daily health remedy.
Does Baking Soda and Lemon Water “Detox” the Body?
There is no good evidence that this drink detoxifies the body or cleanses the blood.
Your body already has organs—including the liver and kidneys—that perform these functions naturally. Lemon water can contribute to fluid intake, but adding baking soda does not turn it into a detox treatment.
Important Safety Reminder
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, and consuming too much can cause harmful effects. Avoid using baking soda as a substitute for prescribed medication or medical treatment.
If you are experiencing symptoms such as persistent swelling, unusual thirst, chest pain, severe abdominal pain, or significant changes in blood pressure, seek appropriate medical advice rather than relying on a homemade drink.
Enjoy It for What It Is
Lemon and water can make a refreshing beverage, and a very small amount of baking soda creates a naturally fizzy reaction. Keep the recipe simple, use moderation, and don’t expect it to provide medical cures or instant health benefits.
