Bâtonnets au Jambon et au Fromage (Ham and Cheese Sticks)

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices of ham (preferably thinly sliced)
  • 8 sticks of cheese (such as mozzarella, Emmental, or Gruyère)
  • 1 sheet of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: dried herbs (such as oregano or thyme)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the Puff Pastry:
    • Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. If using store-bought pastry, simply unroll it. Cut the sheet into strips about 1.5 inches wide.
  3. Assemble the Sticks:
    • Lay one slice of ham on top of each strip of puff pastry.
    • Place a cheese stick at one end of the pastry strip, on top of the ham.
  4. Roll the Pastry:
    • Gently roll up the puff pastry with the ham and cheese inside, starting from the side with the cheese stick. You should have a tight roll.
  5. Egg Wash:
    • Beat the egg in a small bowl. Brush the egg wash over the top of each roll to give them a golden, crispy finish once baked.
  6. Bake:
    • Place the rolls onto the prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle a little salt, pepper, and optional dried herbs (like oregano or thyme) on top for extra flavor.
    • Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden and crispy.
  7. Serve:
    • Allow the bâtonnets to cool for a few minutes before serving. These are perfect as an appetizer, snack, or even a light meal!

Optional Variations:

  • Add Dijon Mustard: Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on the puff pastry before adding the ham for a tangy kick.
  • Use Different Cheeses: Try different types of cheese, like cheddar, Comté, or a creamy goat cheese, for a variety of flavors.
  • Add Veggies: For a more filling snack, add a few thin slices of tomato or spinach along with the ham and cheese.
