Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions

Here’s a flavorful and easy recipe for Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions:


Ingredients:

  • For the Marinade:
    • 1 lb (450g) beef steak (flank or sirloin), thinly sliced
    • 2 tbsp soy sauce
    • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
    • 1 tsp cornstarch
    • 1 tsp sesame oil
    • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • For the Stir-Fry:
    • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
    • 1 large onion, sliced
    • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
    • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 tsp grated ginger
    • 2 tbsp soy sauce
    • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
    • 1/4 cup beef broth or water
    • 1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (for thickening)
    • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions:

1. Marinate the Beef:

  • In a bowl, combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, cornstarch, sesame oil, and sugar. Mix well.
  • Add the thinly sliced beef to the marinade and toss to coat. Let it marinate for at least 20 minutes (or up to 1 hour in the fridge).

2. Prepare the Vegetables:

  • Slice the onions and bell peppers into strips. Mince the garlic and grate the ginger.

3. Cook the Beef:

  • Heat 1 tbsp of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat.
  • Add the marinated beef in a single layer and cook for 2–3 minutes, until browned but not fully cooked.
  • Remove the beef from the pan and set aside.

4. Stir-Fry the Vegetables:

  • Add the remaining 1 tbsp of oil to the skillet.
  • Stir-fry the onions, green, and red bell peppers for 3–4 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp.
  • Add garlic and ginger, cooking for 30 seconds until fragrant.

5. Combine and Sauce:

  • Return the beef to the pan.
  • Add soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and beef broth. Stir to combine.
  • Pour in the cornstarch slurry and mix well. Cook for another 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the beef and vegetables.
  • Sprinkle generously with freshly ground black pepper.

6. Serve:

  • Remove from heat and serve hot over steamed white rice or noodles.

Tips:

  • For extra flavor: Add a splash of rice vinegar or a dash of chili oil.
  • Tender beef: Freeze the steak for 15–20 minutes before slicing; this helps achieve thin, even cuts.
